Pregnancy is an exciting and new time in any woman’s life.  Although it is a joyful experience it can also be a challenging and stressful time. The mother's body is changing quickly to meet the needs of the growing child. It is also a time when she starts to think more about her health and getting fit and well.  This is where the Complementary Health Practitioner comes into action!

As a Complementary Practitioner, it is vital to be fully educated and trained to have a full understanding about Pregnancy before working on anyone who is pregnant, particularly with the impending changes in standards and regulations within the industry.  This includes learning all about the incredible changes in the anatomy and physiology that occurs throughout the 9 months, and also about any contraindications to treatments.

The new Maternity Massage Practitioner Diploma course will give you the full confidence and training to become a competent Maternity Massage Practitioner.

Pre-natal massage focuses on some of the unique physical needs of the mother-to-be and is much more than just a luxury. Massage is a wonderful solution to some of the temporary challenges of pregnancy. It provides relaxation by relieving stress on joints, easing pain, and helping with the postural changes associated with the progressing pregnancy. Massage therapy is also believed to stimulate the endocrine system, which helps to stabilise hormone levels and relieves nervous tension. Certain massage oils and creams, including those that contain vitamin E, may help keep the skin supple, which can reduce the discomfort caused by the constantly growing belly.

More and more women are turning to Complementary Therapies during their pregnancy. Don’t lose out by having to turn them away because you are not fully qualified.

Massage therapy is not only good before childbirth, but during labour and also afterwards. Post-natal massage focuses on helping to restore the mother's body to its pre-pregnancy condition. Massage therapy plays an important part in restoring the abdominal muscles and the uterus to its normal healthy state and stability. It relieves muscle tension and stress from everyday activities, especially new mothering duties. Besides the physical benefits, the special attention and quiet time during massage can also help to balance the new mother's emotional state. The loving touch of hands can provide a time to relax and reflect for the new mother, and may help with postpartum depression.

The ancient art of aromatherapy - the use of essential oils of plants and herbs - is a safe, non-invasive, natural treatment for both body and mind. Using aromatherapy for pregnancy and birth is also an age old process. Aromatherapy is an excellent way to de-stress, re-energise and relieve tension. Essential oils can be extremely useful to aid fertility, to use during pregnancy, for labour and for post natal recovery.

While some mothers-to-be look and feel their best during pregnancy, this is unfortunately not the case for all.  Many of the tremendous changes a woman undergoes during pregnancy can lead to many discomforts - from morning sickness to stretch marks. And since nearly all medicines and traditional remedies are off-limits to expecting mums, natural methods come as a great relief to help ease these symptoms. In addition to proper nutrition and regular exercise, the use of herbs and aromatherapy during the latter part of the pregnancy can alleviate many ailments.

Many midwives and other birth professionals are now incorporating aromatherapy into their practice as a gentle and effective way of helping relax the labouring woman, ease pain and calm anxiety - either on its own or alongside conventional methods of pain relief.
Regular aromatherapy massage can be very beneficial for both mother and baby; soothing, calming and nurturing both.

Aromatherapy can be invaluable in aiding women trying to conceive, with various problems that occur during pregnancy, for labour and for post-natal healing.

This diploma course will help you to learn about which essential oils are safe to use during each stage of the pregnancy and about all contraindications and physiological changes. You will gain a greater understanding about how essential oils can be safely used for all women.

During the weekend we will cover the following:

·        What is aromatherapy?

·        What is an essential oil?

·        Benefits of aromatherapy – general and pregnancy specific
